Welcome
to the official website of the Pioneer Valley Military &
Transportation Museum! We are located at Westfield - Barnes
Airport in Westfield, MA. We are a non-profit 501(c)3 educational
museum-to-be preserving and presenting all forms of military
transportation.
Our
vision is to have an “Active” museum! Trucks that
can be driven, aircraft that fly and other vehicles milling
about! We plan to have much more than static displays like many
museums. Our goal is to educate the public in an exciting manner
with a hands-on experience for all ages. See a WWII airplane
take off and fly, view a working air tower replica from the
war and read about history first hand from a letter written
almost 100 years ago.
Our
site will allow visitors to view aircraft activity at the airport
including F15 activity as the 104th Fighter Wing prepares for
full operational status as well as to periodically observe vintage
war birds and other vintage military and civilian vehicles visiting
the museum.
We
welcome all new members! A large membership makes up a great
institution. Come be part of history in the present and in the
future.
A
message from our president!
Hello Members,
------I hope you have been enjoying
your summer! Soon school begins and before you know it winter
will be here! There are several events coming up that will certainly
make for a great beginning to the upcoming fall season. The
most important event is our 3rd annual Benefit Dinner &
Dance. This year we plan to have a buffet dinner included with
a dance party. It will be a great time! We have scheduled the
event for September 20th 2008 at 5:30pm to 11:00pm at the East
Mountain Country Club in Westfield, MA. The buffet will be catered
by EMCC and the music will be provided by Cory and the Knightsmen
Band! This is a very important fundraiser, so please make an
effort to support our organization by purchasing tickets and
joining us for a great time! Space is limited to 250 so please
call soon to get your tickets. Don’t forget the following
events either! September 6th & 7th we will be at the Great
New England Air Show at Westover Air Reserve Base, Chicopee,
MA and September 26th, 27th & 28th, 2008 we will be at the
Brainard Airport, Hartford, CT for a Veteran's celebration.
------In other news, we have decided
to sell some of the museum items that do not fit our mission
or our village theme. Recently, we successfully sold the Antonov
AN-2 airplane. There are several other items we have decided
to liquidate and will be offered for sale soon. With the sale
of these items and our profits from fundraisers, we will be
closer to beginning our capital campaign and construction plans.
We are still working on site plans and drawings for the village
theme. Once we have the complete drawing package, we will be
able to cost the project completely and at that point discuss
phasing. We have made progress on our needs assessment. Our
design committee has agreed on most of the buildings we plan
to have, their sizes and what the focus of the contents of each
building may be. Our pre-campaign assessment has led us to discuss
assistance from a few different fund raising organizations.
We are also trying to add several “connected” individuals
to grow our board and we continue to develop our donor group
as we work towards our campaign.
------There is a lot going on and
much more to come. We continue to struggle with all the pieces
of such a venture. However, we need your help! If you or someone
you know shares our passion and has architectural skills, fundraising
skills, or any other resources that could aid our organization,
please let me know. We are getting closer but still need more
horsepower to get to the starting block! I am confident that
with a great start, we can win our event ~ building a unique
and fantastic museum. I have been watching the Olympics, especially
swimming (I was an All American swimmer and I still coach).
I know that Michael Phelps could not have achieved 8 gold medals
without the help and dedication of some amazing people. His
family, coaches and trainers have put in as much effort as he
has to accomplish his goals. We need the same support and dedication.
With hard work and connections with the right individuals, we
too will have a spectacular finish!
